What is SMILE?
SMILE (Sistem Monitoring Imunisasi dan Logistik secara Elektronik) is a Digital Public Good for real-time vaccine cold chain monitoring. It ensures vaccines remain viable throughout the supply chain by monitoring temperature, humidity, and other critical conditions from central warehouses to remote health facilities.
Who built SMILE?
SMILE was built by Badr Interactive, an Indonesian software house established in 2011, in partnership with UNDP and the Ministry of Health of Indonesia (Kemenkes RI).
Is SMILE open source?
Yes, SMILE is committed to becoming a verified Digital Public Good (DPG). Its core platform is open-source and freely available, enabling any country or organization to adopt and deploy it without licensing barriers.
Where is SMILE currently deployed?
SMILE is deployed in Indonesia at national scale — covering 514 kabupaten/kota with 10,300+ daily active users (Puskesmas) across 17,000+ islands (UNDP, 2026). It is also deployed in Malawi, Africa as eHIN Malawi (electronic Health Information Network), extending the platform across 2 continents (UNDP, 2026).
What technology does SMILE use?
SMILE uses ClickHouse for real-time analytics, MariaDB for reliable storage, Docker for containerized deployment, and provides REST APIs for integration with national health information systems.
